Mr. Owen Grant, Sr., 60, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, died on October 4, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Mr. Owen Grant, Sr. was born in Edgecombe County on September 14, 1954 to the late Ishaman Grant and Maggie Mercer. He departed this life on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at VA Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.

Mr. Owen Grant, Sr. was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Edwards Grant and Eastmand Grant, Jr.

Mr. Owen Grant, Sr. received his education from Rocky Mount City Schools and graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High Class of 1973. He attended Edgecombe Community College and later served in the United States Army with the rank of Sergeant E-5 for five years in which he served his country well. Not only was he a soldier in the Army, but he was a soldier in and around his community. During the flood of Hurricane Flood he made several trips in his boat going from house to house to gather people from the flooded community to take them to high-er grounds. He retired from Draka Elevator Company.

Mr. Owen Grant, Sr. was a member of Unity Lodge #64 as a Ma-son and ended up as a Shriner. He was always assisting his community and family. He was a kind person and carried himself well.

Owen was a very loving and devoted husband to his wife, Mrs. Bernice Grant, and a great father to his children. Not only did he care about his children but he was always giving sound advice to other young people as he cared about the depths of their souls. He also was a devoted church member of North End Baptist Church.

To know him was to love him because he showed love when he cared for his mother, as well as an aunt during their illnesses.

He always had a genuine smile and when he made a promise he kept it.

He did not expect anything in return. He was a man of honor, and integrity to all.

He leaves to cherish his wife, Mrs. Bernice Grant; two sons, Owen Grant, Jr. of Brooklyn, NY, Maurice Harper of Rocky Mount, NC; two daughters, Shanta L. Brown (Robert) of Dover, DE, Chinue Grant Ransome (James) of Clayton, NC; one brother, Larry L.
